Health in the “Too Much Information” Age

Suffering from information overload when it comes to your health and wellness? Read on for what to do instead!

Although the current life expectancy is longer than at almost any other point in history, that number has dropped between 2015 and now. The reason? According to Statista.com, this drop has been partly “attributed to negative societal trends, such as unbalanced diets and sedentary lifestyles…”

Even in the age of technological and medical advancements the likes of which humanity has never seen, people are still making poor choices that contribute to an earlier death.

How is that possible?

Your lifestyle, beliefs and, perhaps most importantly, your understanding of your body and who you are all play a role in your overall health and healing!

How often have you heard someone say, “He was so healthy! He ran marathons- how could he have had a fatal heart attack?”

Is that statement really true or merely our interpretation?

For example, a lot of runners have low muscle tone because running for long periods of time erodes muscle. This can become dangerous when the runner is not present and listening to their body. Unfortunately, some runners overwork themselves without the nutrition, etc. to back it up.

Remember: The heart is a muscle, so while your other muscles are eroding this can stress your heart.

However, the common conception is that our ‘heart muscle’ is different from our ‘leg muscle.’ That’s simply not true!

The moral of the story? Just because someone is incredibly active does not necessarily mean that they’re ‘healthy.’ There’s more to overall health than meets the eye.

Let’s try another example:

“I was feeling fine. All I did was reach for something, and my back went out. Now, I have chronic pain.”

In this scenario, you were obviously not ‘fine’; otherwise, your back wouldn’t have gone out from such a simple task. Maybe your hip was misaligned from your knee, causing you to walk and lift incorrectly.

What if your body could alert you to those misalignments long before you actually injure yourself? Then you would have the opportunity to correct your alignment before it resulted in more serious problems.

My point in both examples is that there are so many things happening behind the scenes that contribute to ill health. You just can’t see them because your story (i.e. your interpretation of events) clouds your vision to the truth.

This idea that “all I did was move wrong” completely exempts you from having to investigate all the things that led up to the injury. Instead, it places the blame on your body or some other ‘unknown’ without any personal responsibility.

The key to aging gracefully and reversing damage over time is to live in what’s really happening, not what you believe to be happening.

Think about it. There are so many ways to help your back before it goes out and even afterwards. You just need to be willing to sit in this idea: “I need to make changes.” Then, you need to be willing to see the answer for what it is, not what you want it to be.

If you continue to hold onto the idea that “all I did was move and my back went out,” then you will only be limiting yourself. Those ‘health blinders’ will literally cripple you.

One thing I have learned in my 20 years of experience working with clients is that we all read health and wellness tips. We believe them and adopt them as a way of life until something shakes that belief. Without any other information, we accept those tips as truth because someone else said we should.

I’ve seen so many juice detoxes and fad diets killing digestive systems and wasting away bone and muscle - all because someone else promised it was ‘healthy.’

I’ve seen overworked bodies from aggressive exercise because it’s supposed to be ‘good for you.’

I’ve seen extreme dieting in the name of ‘health’- without exercise to back it up- that leads to massive muscle and bone loss.

We, as a society, are too susceptible to the ‘easy way out’ instead of deciding to stay present in our own bodies and let that guide us.

Instead of taking all your health and wellness information from outside sources, let your Body Within be the guide.

I always ask people, “Why would you need to make that extreme lifestyle change instead of balancing what you are doing and learning what you need?”

One common response I hear is, “It’s just easier for someone to tell me what to buy, cook, eat, how much to exercise, etc.”

That always makes me laugh. How can a total lifestyle change be easier than merely paying attention to what you are doing and how it makes you feel?

Another common response is, “Balancing my food and accessing myself after I eat it makes me responsible for my actions. It’s too hard!”

How is it that we’ve completely lost the ability to think and problem-solve for ourselves? I think one of the reasons is that there is always an easier answer a keystroke away.

Sometimes, too much information isn’t a good thing.

How do we fix that?

We have to start wanting more for ourselves. We have to desire an understanding of the human body and all the amazing gifts and information that lie within.

I’m not telling you to completely ditch medicine and other people’s health and wellness advice; I am saying that you can absorb that information and decide if it’s right for you, instead of buying in right away and losing muscle, bone, money and sanity.

We were not born helpless. We all have the ability to go inward and learn from what our body teaches us on a daily basis. We can sit quietly, self-access and work with the body to self-heal many things before medical intervention is necessary.

Connect to your Body Within- either with my method or one of your own!

Your body will thank you.
