The Healing Power Of Seasonal Eating

Living a life of balance and aging gracefully starts with a solid foundation. Nutrition is the key component of learning how to use food as medicine so you are able to become your own healer.

One of the best ways to get started is by incorporating seasonal eating into your food choices.

Every season has healing energy in it and so does your food! The energy in your seasonal vegetables work best if they are consumed during the times they are naturally in season because your body will recognize the nutrition and utilize it more efficiently.

‘Tis the season for a nutritional boost

Summer is a great time to boost your energy with local foods. You can visit your local farmers markets or check out the local section if your grocery store. You can pick fresh without ever getting your hands dirty.

As summer is beginning to wind down it isn’t too late to enjoy these seasonal summer foods:

  • Cherries are full of vitamin C, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and folate. They also possess a large concentration of beneficial phytonutrients that have positive health effects.

  • Zucchini possesses many valuable minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and plenty of potassium.

  • Summer squash is full of calcium, iron, and vitamins C, A, and B, as well as beta-carotene and lutein.

  • String beans & snap peas are packed with protein, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and copper, and a very good source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and manganese.

  • Swiss chard provides you with vitamins A and K and nearly fulfills the RDI for vitamin C. What's more, Swiss chard is a good source of calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, sodium, phosphorus and vitamin E.

3 ways to get started with seasonal eating

  1. Try to pick a new item weekly to boost your body and learn about how foods make you feel when you eat them

  2. Look up a new way to prepare something you are tired of eating, Pinterest is a good place to start. The ideas are endless

  3. Make a new recipe and share not only the recipe but the knowledge of the food and its healing properties. Show off a bit and learn at the same time. You would be surprised how many people would be interested to know their food is more than something to eat.
