Nutrition and Healing Your Body

Start using food as medicine and learn how to give your body the energy it needs to heal!

There are lots of different diets, ranging from weight loss to healing diets.

A lot of them are pretty extreme with different food combinations: meat and vegetables, no grains, low-fat, all-fat, no nightshades, all organic, keto, paleo, etc.

My daughter, a nurse practitioner, said the other day, “I know you have a strong opinion about nutrition, and I have seen what your method has done for you. But what makes you think your way is the right way for most people?”

This took me off guard! I raised her to be smart and ask questions, but she wasn’t supposed to do it to me!

In all seriousness, though, after answering her, I decided to share my answer with you.

How To Know When to Make Changes in Nutrition to Aid Your Healing Process

I know someone’s nutrition is sound when their body responds to our session by creating a better flow of energy. This may look like opening stuck tissue areas to regain mobility and/or breaking up scar tissue to wake up lost patterns. The body may also improve how it moves from session to session, creating a better health profile as they age.

Those instances are all clues that their body is always building and repairing when I see them. They already have the right nutrients to run their body efficiently, heal and repair from their daily activities, and they have enough energy for their body to heal and regain lost mobility as they age. I know that I don’t have to address nutrition, in that case, to help them reach their goals because their nutrition profile is already working.

However, when clients come in and each session is the same, and/or their body is not getting stronger, that usually means that they don’t have the energy for their body to make change. That’s the best clue that tells me that a change in their nutrition habits can improve how their body heals.

I work with clients of all ages, and even my 80-year old clients are still building and repairing if they have the energy to do so. Your body will only stop healing when it runs out of energy.

Is poor nutrition the only thing that stops the body from healing? Well, no, but it is the most common reason, in my experience, so that’s always the first place to start investigating!

See, it’s really not about me and what I think is the right nutrition; it’s about listening to what your body does with what you feed it. As a society, we settle for breaking down as we age and accept that we can only heal illness to a certain extent.

Connecting with your Body Within is all about letting your body take you to the highest level of healing that you can personally achieve, not what society accepts as healing.

The key to getting to the highest level of healing is a strong look in the mirror! First of all, you need to identify your goals for healing. Then, look at your food as medicine. You may also want to consider certain supplements or medication, but your nutrition should always come first! Healing always starts with YOU!

Nutrition and Energy Medicine

From an energy medicine perspective, what you feed grows. If you feed your body in a positive way, it will continue healing and repairing, even as you age.

If you deplete your body with bad nutrition, calorie restrictions, and/or over-exercising, you won’t have enough energy to heal and repair as you age.

Here’s a quick example:

I have a client who is 30-years old with a spinal fusion in his neck.

He was in constant pain. His anxiety was off the charts, and his weight was too low for his body type. The doctors didn’t have an answer for his pain, so he tried alternative medicine.

His diet was extreme and very limited. He had been instructed to eliminate the five most common allergens and almost all grains. (This is a pretty common practice in the world of alternative medicine.)

Here’s the problem: if you’re not allergic or sensitive to those allergens or grains, but you remove them anyway, you’re robbing your body of vital nutrients! Supplements can help, but your body can not recognize broccoli in a pill form, so it’s really not an adequate replacement.

My client agreed to try my approach instead. We began creating balance from a nutrition standpoint and started fueling his body according to how many calories it should take to run efficiently. We even increased his caloric intake to heal and repair from pain and loss of movement from his neck.

I saw him recently, and I was shocked!

He had gained muscle tone, and more importantly, seemed shrouded in an air of calm. He no longer looked weak and frail, and his pain is almost non-existent now.

This is not an uncommon story! We have become so afraid of food and calories that we forget how important nutrition is to our healing! Many people have become sheep- just accepting the beliefs of others and applying that to their lives.

The key to healing illness and repairing your body as you age is to tailor your nutrition to your personal needs, not the needs of the masses.

Nutrition is life, whether we want to accept that or not. What you choose to put in your body as you heal and age should come from how your body responds to different types of food. You should never make decisions solely based on what someone else feels is best for you.
